Here is the short version: Microsoft publishes a date. After that date, free patches stop. This Microsoft end of support lookup is a browser table of the Windows, Server, Office, SQL, Exchange, and SharePoint versions Southern California offices still run. Search a name. Read the countdown. Then confirm the row on Microsoft Learn lifecycle.
It is not a scanner. It will not read your RMM. It will not invent a license quote. If winver says 24H2, search 24H2. If the Start menu still says Windows 10, you already missed October 14, 2025.
How to read a lifecycle date
Microsoft uses two policies.
Fixed policy (Windows Server, SQL Server, most on-prem Office LTSC): a start date, a mainstream end, then an extended end. Extended is security-only. After extended, you buy ESU if it exists, or you move.
Modern policy (Windows 10/11 Home and Pro, Microsoft 365 Apps): versions retire on a schedule. The product brand can stay “in support” while your installed version is dead. That is how a firm on Windows 11 23H2 is already out of support on Home/Pro even though “Windows 11” is current.
The table stores the date people mean when they ask “when does this end.” For Server 2016 that is extended end, January 12, 2027, matching Microsoft’s Windows Server 2016 end of support planning note. Learn lists 1/13/2027 6:59 a.m. Pacific, which is the end of that calendar day in Redmond. We display the date offices put on a project plan.
Worked example: a 40-person firm in 2026
A typical professional office we still see:
- File server or domain controller on Windows Server 2016
- Accounting on SQL Server 2016
- Desktops that never left Windows 10, or that jumped to Windows 11 24H2 Home/Pro
- Perpetual Office 2021 because someone hated a subscription
On 6 September 2026 that inventory is not theoretical:
- SQL Server 2016 extended support ended 14 July 2026 (ESU year 1 runs through 13 July 2027)
- SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019 also ended 14 July 2026
- Windows 10 free patches ended 14 October 2025 (ESU year 1 through 13 October 2026)
- Office 2021 ends 13 October 2026
- Windows 11 24H2 Home/Pro ends 13 October 2026
- Windows Server 2012 R2 ESU year 3 ends 13 October 2026
- Windows Server 2022 mainstream (not extended) ends 13 October 2026
- Windows Server 2016 extended support lasts until 12 January 2027
That is not five separate science projects. It is one migration season. Size the new host with the VM calculator before you order disks. If the old box is also the only backup target, fix that first with backup and disaster recovery.
Windows 10 is not a grace period
Windows 10 Home and Pro are done. Consumer and commercial ESU programs exist for a paid, time-boxed stream of security updates. They do not add features. They do not make an old laptop “fine.” CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog is full of bugs that only get a patch on a supported OS. An unpatched desktop is how ransomware walks in next to a real user.
Hardware is the other half. Plenty of 2018 PCs fail Windows 11 checks. That is an Intune and procurement problem, not a registry trick. Our Microsoft Intune for small business note is the device-control half of the same move.
Office 2021 is a date, not a feeling
Microsoft’s own upgrade table says Office LTSC 2021 ends 13 October 2026. Office 2016 and 2019 already ended 14 October 2025. Microsoft 365 Apps stay supported while you run a current channel. Perpetual Office is a cliff. If you need a frozen feature set for a regulated bench, Office LTSC 2024 lasts until 9 October 2029. Most offices do not need a frozen bench. They need Word that still talks to Exchange Online.
Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 ended 14 October 2025. Microsoft’s Exchange 2019 and 2016 end of support roadmap is blunt: migrate to Microsoft 365 or to Exchange Server Subscription Edition. A lonely 2019 box in a closet is not a hybrid strategy.
What this lookup is not
It is not every SKU Microsoft has ever shipped. No Visual Studio. No Dynamics GP. No Windows 11 IoT. Enterprise and Education Windows 11 versions last longer than Home/Pro; we label Home/Pro on purpose so you do not copy a consumer date onto an Enterprise fleet.
It is not ESU pricing. We do not invent dollars. If you need ESU, get a quote from a licensing partner and treat it as rent.
It is not a replacement for an inventory. winver, server manager, SQL SELECT @@VERSION, and the Office account page beat a hallway poll. Search the string you actually have.
Unsupported software is also a cybersecurity problem, not only an infrastructure one. Patch Tuesday cannot save a product that has no Tuesday. If the score on our cybersecurity risk assessment is already ugly, an ended OS is usually in the pile.
ESU is rent
Extended Security Updates buy time. They do not buy a future. Microsoft is explicit that ESU for Server 2016 is a bridge, billed through Azure Arc, while you upgrade to Server 2025 or move the workload. SQL Server 2016 already entered ESU year 1 in July 2026. Windows Server 2012 R2 ESU year 3 ends 13 October 2026. If the only plan is “we bought ESU,” you still need a date for the real move, and it should be on a calendar this quarter, not after the invoice doubles.
Do not skip line-of-business apps. The server is rarely the hard part. The vendor who certified the scheduling package on Server 2016 is. Call them first. If they are gone, that is the project.

What does Microsoft end of support mean?
After the published date, Microsoft stops free security updates, non-security fixes, and assisted support for that product or version. The software can still boot. New vulnerabilities stay open unless you move, or you buy a time-boxed Extended Security Updates program where one exists.
When does Windows Server 2016 end of support happen?
Extended support for Windows Server 2016 ends on January 12, 2027. Mainstream support already ended in January 2022. Microsoft announced paid Extended Security Updates as a bridge, delivered through Azure Arc. A bridge is not a five-year plan.
Is Windows 10 still supported?
Free security updates stopped on October 14, 2025. Paid ESU year 1 runs through October 13, 2026. ESU does not restore feature updates. The supported path for most offices is Windows 11 on hardware that can run it, with Intune or similar device control.
When does Office 2021 end of support happen?
Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 reach end of support on October 13, 2026. Office 2016 and Office 2019 already ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft 365 Apps stay in support while you run a current channel. Perpetual Office is a date. Subscription Office is a servicing habit.

No. It is a fast lookup of the dates offices actually ask about, copied from Microsoft Learn listings. Channel, edition, and LTSC SKUs can differ. Open the product page before you write a purchase order or a migration weekend.
What should I do if a product already ended?
Inventory it, isolate it if you cannot move this week, then schedule the upgrade or the cloud move. Unsupported OS and Office versions show up in cyber insurance questionnaires and in ransomware playbooks. Hope is not a control.
